BETTE DAVIS - Autographed Letter Signed
Handwritten two page letter on "Honeysuckle Hill" letterhead dated August 2 1, 1964.
Letter includes the following content. "Dear Mr. Mason, / I had no address for / Mr. Nelier's- and have been hoping someone would / communicate with me - / So I can return his script / as he must remember, I am an admirer of his work and / wish I liked his story better / For me - I think it has to / do with the fact - I am / hoping to leave the murder area which seems to / follow me wherever I go at / this point. This not / Mr. Nelier's fault - it is just / bad timing for me. / Again - apologies and / thank you for writing me. / Sincerely, / Bette Davis / August 21, 196 4" written in green ink.
Davis studied drama in New York and began her career with bit stage parts in 1926. She went to Hollywood in 1931, playing in minor roles until her characterization of Mildred, the Cockney waitress in Of Human Bondage (1934), established her reputation as an important actress. In 1935 she won the Academy Award for her powerful portrayal of the aging alcoholic star in Dangerous (1935). Other notable films of the 1930s were The Petrified Forest (1936), Jezebel (1938), for which she won her second Academy Award, Dark Victory (1939), and The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex (1939). Throughout this period, Davis waged bitter court battles to break her contract with Warner Brothers Studio, which had refused to relinquish control over her screen material and to consistently give her the excellent roles that she coveted.
