A rare and beautiful species of Acer, only introduced to the UK in 1990 - with five-lobed leaves emerging deep purple and reds in the spring, turning green and then brilliant orange and scarlets in the autumn


The trees are easy to keep small (if desired) with pruning


Makes an excellent bonsai tree as the roots are very shallow and it is easily dwarfed

Growing Details


Height: 15-25 feet (5-8 m) in time when planted in the ground; much smaller in a pot (under 4 feet as a bonsai)

Plant type: Deciduous, small tree

Hardiness: Fully hardy to -25°C (-13°F)  Very young seedlings and plants should have their new growth protected from very hard frosts

Shelter from very strong winds

Sun Exposure: Full sun to partial shade.  Dislikes strong mid-day sun within the summer

Flowering time: Spring

Soil: Moist but well-drained, acidic

Propagation methods: From seed, and softwood or semi-hardwood cuttings
