Circa late 1800's to 1900 Antique Clear Glass Rosary in Brass

This large antique rosary is circa late 1800's till at least 1900. It is made of brass metal and is one of those type of old rosary that is very practical for your everyday use. They are made of Czech faceted clear glass beads that looks like frozen ice cubes thus my term 'icy collection. They are beads made and popularly used in the 1800's when Bohemian beads were made at the height of its production and exported to many countries. They come in many colours so please standby for more listings.

This is an old French rosary and yet it evokes a certain elegance and some form of sacredness knowing that it has gone through many prayers and that it has survived well. If you are one of those devotees who likes to use antique rosaries for your prayers, this is your chance to have it.

Please take the time to examine the details of this antique rosary:

Crucifix: is made of solid brass T-frame. The corpus is soldered to the frame. Size: 4.5cm x 2.4cm.

Beads: are made of 'icy' round faceted clear Czech beads. They are pressed glass yet none of them are exactly the same because they were still finished by hand. My reading points to the fact that these pressed beads were in production from early 1800's. The method of production still requires attention by hand to take away rough protruding edges, thus some beads have rough edges initially. However, time and many prayers have smooth out the beads of this beautiful and yet simple rosary. Clear beads are benificial in praying, it is non-distracting. Size: 6.5 to 7mm.

Links: double links made of brass. This is a durable rosary. Since this rosary is more than a hundred years old, most of the time these links get twisted and distorted. I spent many hours (and sometimes call it 'meditation') checking each and every single link is in place so that hopefully it will be in perfect working condition for the next prayerful custodian. It is a pleasure for me to pass it on to the next custodian hoping that they will last another hundred years if taken cared of properly. All chain is original and all working perfectly. Though these links have acquired oxidisation, they are actually better being left as is rather than cleaned. If used regularly, the brass metal will shine beautifully with the right 'look' commensurate to its age.

Center Medal: is typical center medal in the 1800's with a crown symbolising the Virgin Mary as queen of the Holy Rosary. Reverse side shows the two Sacred Hearts of Mary and Jesus with Mary's Heart pierced with a sword in anticipation of her sacrifice to give away her son.

Medals: first medal is an antique brass pilgrimage round gilded brass medal featuring Madonna and Child Jesus. It is marked: 'Notre Dame de Lachet Priez Pour Nous. Reverse side shows St. Joseph and Child Jesus. It is marked: 'Saint Joseph Priez Pour Nous' (Saint Joseph Pray For Us).

The second medal is an antique aluminium medal honouring the Virgin Mary. Reverse side depicts the image of the Apparition. It is marked: 'Je Suis L' Immaculee Conception'. (I am the Immaculate Conception).

The third rectangular medal is an antique pilgrimage aluminium medal honouring St Aubierge also called Ethelburga. It is marked: 'Sainte Aubierge P.P.N. (Priez Pour Nous). Reverse side says: 'Diocese de Meaux', Pelerinage Et Confrerie (Pilgrimage and Brotherhood), Paroisse St. Augustin (Parish of St. Augustin). There is not enough material to learn about this saint but my research says St. Aubierge who died in 664 or 665 AD was the daughter of an Anglo-Saxon king called Anna. This princess became a nun and then an abbess at Faremoutier, Brie, France. She started to build an abbey church but was not completed at the time of her death. She is included in the Roman, French and English Martyrology. She was buried in this church but when her remains were transferred at the church of St. Stephen, her body was found incorrupt. Further reading about this saint says that many noble women in East Anglia at that time wanted to become nuns and devote their lives in the cloisters in France. Note as well that the founding of religious brotherhoods and sisterhoods became popular in the late 1400's and more so till the 1800's.

This antique rosary is not just a beautiful antique item but a devotional tool that gives us a glimpse on the way of life of those people before us.
