Ari Marcopoulos Silver Gelatin Print ~ Kiki Smith

  • Item: Silver gelatin print photograph by listed artist Ari Marcopoulos (Dutch / American, born 1957) -- copyright Ari Marcopoulos -- depicting an intimate portrait of feminist artist Kiki Smith (Am., born 1954) sitting before her work entitled All Souls. The photograph was taken in the late 1980's. It was subsequently printed ca. 2008 in a small limited edition of 15 w/ 1 artist's proof. The photographer, Ari Marcopoulos, is quite famous today but back in the 80's he started out as Assistant to Pop Art painter Andy Warhol. According to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) website Kiki Smith's All Souls was influenced by Andy Warhol's screenprints, hence the relation here. Provenance: The Project (art gallery owner: Christian Haye), 37 West 57th Street, 3rd Fl., New York, NY, 10019, USA. This photograph is framed and protected under Ultraviolet Filtering Acrylite Op-3 by City Frame, NY. • Origin: I purchased this item several years ago along with 4 other Marcopoulos photos of Richard Serra, Andy Warhol, David Hammons and Jean-Michel Basquiat (all with Provenance from The Project gallery in New York which at the time worked closely with Marcopoulos in exhibiting his work).

  • Features: From the net: “Ari Marcopoulos (1957): Ari Marcopoulos arrived in New York from the Netherlands in 1979, and started taking pictures. He documented the relationship between Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, making some of the last images seen of both. He recorded the legendary downtown skateboarding scene in '90s New York from the street, making some of the first images ever seen of, among others, the teenaged Harold Hunter and Justin Pierce. Through the past decade he has proven to be one of America's only firmly established artists playing by no established rules—despite, for example, his two appearances in the Whitney Biennial, the survey exhibition considered the most important bellwether of contemporary American art. Marcopoulos takes very little interest in today's gallery system and its business of wealth, canonization and the market. Marcopoulos' practice these days is very much about what he sees on a daily basis. Composing and distributing work in the form of publications is a constant part of his public output, so the most recent work is always what is focused on."
