This antique rosary is made of white glossy Prosser beads which was made out of glass paste then made into molded beads. . Prosser beads are usually identified by the not so visible band around the bead. Prosser beads were made in France from the 1850's and thus one of the oldest beads for antique rosaries. It was started by the French entrereneur Bapterosses. The process of making the beads was patented initially by the two English brothers, Richard (who patented the process in the 1840's ) and Thomas Prosser (who patented the improvements in the process). The two bothers never made any beads but it was Bapterosses, a button maker and bead maker who added milk into the paste to make buttons and beads in France.

Though made of Prosser beads, my guess on this rosary is that it is dated around the early 1900's, perhaps the first three decades of the twentieth century, due to its construction and its material. Please note that the first two chains of the rosary has had a replacement sometime during its lifetime but has been replaced in harmony with the rest of the rosary. Note too that the crucifix has been silverplated once.

A small rosary and made of white beads, this rosary is ideal as a gift to a small child for the First Communion or the Confirmation. It is ideal as a Baptismal gift for a baby to start his/her Christian life. Please take the time to study the details of this antique rosary:

Crucifix: is made of the silvered brass made in the Art Nouveau design. The ends of the cross features grape fruit and leaves. It is a symbolism that I am trying to find out the meaning behind it. The obverse side of this crucifix has erased most of the silver coating but the reverse side has not. Reverse side is marked: 'Italy'. Size: 33mm x 21mm

Beads: are made of white glossy Prosser beads. They are one of the oldest beads you can find in antique rosaries. They are glossy as if made only yesterday yet this rosary is at least or nearly a hundred years old. The beads are all present. Size of beads: 4mm

Links: are made of brass metal in 'twisted 8' method.....characteristic of rosaries made around this period. There is some link replacement in this rosary.

Centre Medal: is made of antique aluminium. It features the Immaculate Conception. It features the two Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary at the reverse, the big letter M with a cross on top and the twelve stars around it......all images seen by St Catherine Laboure in her vision which led to the making of the Immaculate Conception medal.

Length: approx 14 inches
59 beads
