Description

Pack of 10 viable seeds of Bambusa tulda (Bengal Bamboo or Indian Timber Bamboo) – with full instructions for germination.

A large bamboo, extremely rare to UK and Europe cultivation, mainly native to Southeast Asian and South American rainforests, growing up to 20-40 feet (6-12 m) in height within temperate Europe.  Clumping bamboo (non-invasive).

This fast-growing bamboo forms an upright and tight clump of culms (culms up to 3 inches in diameter) with attractive leaves 5-10cm long.

New shoots usually emerge as a yellow-green, changing to bright-green, with mature culms eventually becoming beautiful greyish greens or misty blues - thanks to a naturally occurring waterproof layer of white powder. The sheath of mature culms are also very attractive.

Hardy to between -3ºC to -7ºC (20-27ºF), but the key is to keep the soil on the dry side during any frost.

B. tulda loves rainfall (or heavy watering) during the warmer months of the year, with the bamboo being especially good at soaking up flood water. They are also very good at reducing soil erosion.   It is one of the most heavily used bamboo species for paper pulp in India and surrounding regions, as well as being used for furniture and basket construction. The species has also traditionally been used in the making of the sacred Eloo flute of Southeast Asia.
