Pack of 10 viable seeds of Fargesia fungosa (also known as Borinda fungosa) – with full instructions for germination.
A highly ornamental, medium-sized bamboo from China, growing to around 5m (15 ft) within temperate Europe. Clumping bamboo (non-invasive).
One of the larger-leaved Fargesias, with canes initially growing upright, gradually developing a graceful, weeping habit and looking particularly impressive shimmering and fluttering within a breeze. They can make beautiful specimens within oriental style gardens.
Culms, eventually 2cm in diameter, start off green, turning a brilliant burgundy-red to chocolate-brown with age, with early morning sun speeding up the colour change. Pink sheaths around the culms are equally attractive.
Hardy to around -5ºC (23ºF), or down to at least -10ºC (5ºF) with protection from a horticultural fleece or mulching. Keep soil on the drier side during any frosts.
Bamboo seeds are not always available due to worldwide shortages of most species; this is because they rarely flower, sometimes every 30 to even 100 years (called gregarious flowering).
