What is Mandelic Acid?
Mandelic
acid is derived
from the hydrolysis of an extract of bitter almonds, it’s a type of alpha hydroxy (AHA) peel, similar to glycolic and lactic acid peels. Because Mandelic acid molecules are larger than both that of
glycolic and lactic acid, Mandelic peels are less penetrating and irritating,
but still very effective for treating damaged skin.
What is
Malic Acid?
Malic
acid can be found naturally in a variety of fruits and vegetables. One of the
most abundant natural sources is apples and that’s why sometimes it’s called
apple acid. It can also be found naturally in your own body cells. It is
only a mildly invasive peel and requires several treatments to get significant
results. A malic acid peel is also used
for acne treatments as it can open pores to allow the sebum to be cleared out
which helps reduce blemishes.
What is it used for?
Mandelic Acid peels are a great choice
for a first-time chemical peel. Their antibacterial qualities also make them
good for people with acne-prone skin. Mandelic Acid works on two levels: as a
mild exfoliant and as an antibacterial. It has been clinically proven to help
eliminate hyper-pigmentation in the skin, such as Melasma, as well as acne and
oily skin. Because it
is one of the gentler chemical peels out there,
it is safe to use for people with Rosacea or darker skin tones. Mandelic Acid
peels will improve your skin faster than using a daily AHA treatment. They tend
to be more helpful than other chemical peels in treating acne, particularly
blackheads that don't respond to anything else. They are also effective
treatments for people with sensitive skin and have not been known to cause any
de-pigmentation. Mandelic Acid works on the epidermis, the upper layer of the
skin. The normal shedding of the layer becomes regular. When applied to the
skin, the acid lifts and removes dead cells to reveal skin underneath that is
smoother, fresher, and healthier looking. Eventually, this layer becomes more
uniform after a peel resulting in a smoother feel, look, and texture of the
skin. As it works into the deeper layers of the epidermis, the appearance of
the skin is improved. Increased blood flow through the skin produces a smooth,
clear, younger looking appearance. Regular use of Mandelic/Malic Acid is the better way of treating
acne, because the skin can then benefit from the acid’s unique antibiotic
action.

Which Strength?
5% Can be used daily as a toner to keep
blackheads and whiteheads at bay 10% Extra Mild Peel for sensitive or fair skin and 1st time users. You
will see slow results
15% Mild Peel for 1st time users and sensitive skin
20% Medium Peel for someone that has normal skin or has had a peel before, use
for minor skin flaws (may cause mild flaking/peeling)
25% Medium -Strong Peel for people that have had peels before, and have acne,
scars and skin flaws
30% Strong peel for experienced users
that have acne, deeper scars, serious skin flaws
(All
our peels can be diluted should you feel the peel you picked is too strong)
If you have
never had a chemical peel before, or if you have sensitive skin, it is recommended that first time users start
with the 5% or 10% Mandelic Acid solution and leave on the skin for only
1-2 minutes. Test a tiny, small portion of your cheek to get an idea of
how well your skin will tolerate this percentage of Mandelic Acid. The 15% and
20% level of Mandelic Acid Chemical Peel is recommended for people who have
used this product previously and know that their skin can tolerate this level
of strength.
Application:
Once the
skin is thoroughly cleansed with an oil free cleanser, you can apply the
Mandelic Acid with one of our applicator brushes, or with a cotton pad. You may
experience slight stinging or tingling while the Mandelic Acid is on the skin. Once
activation time has passed you can apply a neutraliser. If you have not
purchased one of our neutralisers you can make one by mixing a teaspoon of
bicarbonate of soda in water and applying it to the face.
Post Peel:
The skin may
turn pink, but will return to its normal colour within 1 to 2 days. When used
correctly there shouldn't be any redness, burning, or blistering. If you
experience these symptoms seek medical treatment and discontinue use. This will
happen when the product is not used correctly, you are using too high of
glycolic acid strength, or if your skin is too sensitive to handle a chemical
peel. It is normal for the skin to “peel” and appear flaky 1 to 2 days after
use. That means the product is working. This is the dead skin shedding,
allowing a healthy layer to come to the surface. Not all people experience
peeling, or flaking, but if heavy peeling or slight scabbing occurs, apply a
petroleum based product, or antibiotic ointment to help speed healing.
If you are
using this product to control acne, remember that your acne will appear worse
before it looks better. The reason is that as the dead skin layers are peeled
from the face, the acne will be brought to the surface. This is actually
accelerating the healing process. In this case, don’t be discouraged and
continue recommended use to see improvement.
How often?
It is recommended
that you use the Mandelic Acid Chemical Peel solution once weekly for 6 weeks,
then rest your skin for 2 weeks (to allow skin cells to naturally rejuvenate).
After the 2 week rest, you may start another 6 week cycle. Continue this cycle until you achieve desired
results. Certain scars or deep wrinkles may require several cycles of
treatment. 5% and 10% Mandelic Acid may be used twice weekly if the skin can
tolerate it. This product contains alpha hydroxy acid which may increase skin
sensitivity to the sun and increase the likelihood of sun damage or sunburn. Be
certain to use sunscreen protection of at least spf 25 while using this product
and after you discontinue use.
