Measuring your truck cap gas prop/shock:
Gas shocks gone bad! Have you ever gone out to your truck cap and have the rear door fall on your head? Or even your fiberglass bed cover? This makes working out of your truck bed very difficult. When this happens it is time to replace those old shocks/props and where else can you find a better deal than on eBay!
The first thing you will need to know is what numbers to look for and how to measure the length of your shock correctly. The shocks or props ( some sites may refer to them as this also ) will usually the have 3 important things:
1. Part number
2. Poundage ( This is the amount of weight the shock will support )
3. Length ( There are 2 lengths you may need extended and compressed )
There are brands of shocks out there that have a lot of numbers on them so the part number may not be as easy to find. What is very important is the poundage and length. The poundage may be a number followed by a # or lbs., if this is not present there still may be numbers on the shock that your seller can use to determine the poundage .
When measuring for length you can use the extended length in most cases but in some it is important to also know your compressed. Remove your shock ( which is normally done by using a regular screwdriver to gently pry back the clip at the end and pull the shock off the ball mount ) , now measure from the center of the ball mount on one end to the center of the ball mount on the other end ( as shown in picture ). If you should need to measure for the compressed length just push the shock back on to the ball mounts, climb into the bed of the truck and close the door or lid to compress the shock you can then measure from ball mount to ball mount. This should be enough information for the seller to find the right shock for your needs.
Remember it is always important to replace both shocks at the same time because if one shock isn't doing it's job correctly it will wear the other out faster.
