C&O 614: RETURN OF A THOROUGHBRED

In October 1996, famed Chesapeake & Ohio 4-8-4 614 pulled a series of roundtrip excursions between Hoboken, NJ and Port Jervis, NY. Dubbed the Erie Limited, these trips were the first mainline runs for the 614 in nore than 11 years.

This Official Video presents the full story of the 614, from its construction in 1948 through its rebirth as an excursion engine. Through rare archive photos and film, you'll see the 614 in regular service on the C&O, hauling the Chessie Safety Express in 1980, and pulling heavy coal trains on the Chessie System in January 1985 as part of a plan by entrepreneur Ross Rowland to develop a new generation of steam locomotive known as the ACE 3000.

You'll thrill to the sights and sounds of Super Power steam in action as the powerful Lima-built 4-8-4 blasts through tunnels, climbs steep grades, and roars down NJ Transit's ex-Erie main line at 80+ mph with the impressive 26-car Erie Limited. The sights and sounds of the 614 in high-speed passenger service create a truly memorable and rewarding railroad video experience.

C&O 614: Return of A Thoroughbred was honored with a Videographer Award and a Communicator Award in national competitions for excellence in video production.

ROSS ROWLAND: GIANT OF STEAM

Here is the fascinating story of Ross E. Rowland, Jr. Considered by many to be ?America?s Greatest Railfan?, Rowland was largely responsible for creating the steam locomotive excursion industry.

Beginning with a modest series of High Iron Company trips in the mid-1960s featuring several ex-Canadian Pacific 4-6-2's and ex-Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 759, in 1969 Ross next created the famous Golden Spike Centennial Limited. As a rolling celebration of the completion of the first transcontinental railroad, this unique train was pulled by the 759.

The magnificent American Freedom Train followed in 1975 and ?76. Pulled by several steam locomotives including ex-Reading 4-8-4 2101 (renamed Freedom Train #1 and the beautiful ex-Southern Pacific Daylight 4-8-4 4449. Traveling on a 21-month transcontinental tour visiting 138 cities and attracting more than seven million paid visitors, the Freedom Train was the only nationwide celebration of America?s Bicentennial.

In 1977, Ross developed the Chessie Steam Special to honor the 150th Anniversary of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, America?s first railroad. More than 100 steam-powered excursions pulled by ex-Reading 4-8-4 2101 were run over the vast Chessie System in the eastern United States. Two years later, another series of trips, dubbed the Chessie Safety Express, toured that system, powered by ex-C&O 4-8-4 614.

This classic steam locomotive rode the rails again in 1985 to help Rowland?s American Coal Enterprises Corporation conduct tests to develop the ACE 3000, a new generation of coal-powered steam locomotive designed to lessen our country?s dependence on foreign oil.

Ross? most recent project was the Erie Limited, a series of high-speed passenger excursions on New Jersey Transit?s main line between Hoboken, NJ and Port Jervis, NY, from 1996 through 1998.

Giant of Steam premiered before a live audience at the 2003 Convention of the National Railway Historical Society in Baltimore, MD, and in March 2005, it was presented to a live audience of more than 1,100 railroad enthusiasts at the prestigious WinterRail railroad media showcase in Stockton, California. This outstanding MARK I VIDEO documentary recently received a prestigious 25th Anniversary Gold Telly Award as well as a highly-coveted Communicator Crystal Award of Excellence.

A promotional video on C&O 614, produced by Mark I Video for Iron Horse Enterprises, is also included.
