This along with an Antonio Casanova etching were purchased from the estate of an antique print collector.  They were both done on laid vellum or onion skin paper and a rare example of these that have survived remarkably in tact.  Our understanding is that these were made in very limited editions.  We have seen them referred to as tissue etchings; we have also seen references to them being used as an intermediary printer's proof, if you will, to test accuracy of print to the printer's plate due to the translucency of the paper.  The paper on this piece is onion skin.  These would be some of the earliest prints of these 19th century pieces. This piece is mounted in its original folder. It is entitled "Un Uhlan" and depicts a German cavalry (lancer) officer on horseback during the 19th century Germanic and Slavic wars. The impression is highly detailed as one would expect with the characteristics of the onion skin and its ability to retain the ink.  They are French matted - interesting glued art deco paper border on each, but all the bordering was hand done.  The plate measures 12 1/2" x 9 1/2"; framed measurements are 21 1/2" x 18 1/2". Please read condition report and see photos.
