Rare tempera and oil painting – Seaside with boats–

28.9 x 20.8 cm

Signed Andre Derain in the lower margin

Very good condition

Offering a unique original oiland tempera painting depicting a Fauvist view od seaside with boats, signed Andre Derain, in the lower margin of the artwork.

André Derain painted the seasides during his historic stay in the French coastal town Bateaux à Collioure, where he had gone to join his fellow artist and friend, the older Henri Matisse. There, the two worked alongside each other, blazing the trail of the movement that would, in the Salon d'Automne that was held sometime after their return to Paris later that year, be dubbed the 'Fauves.' The wildness that lent the loosely-joined movement its name is clear in the bold, brightly blazing colours of Bateaux à Collioure, with the broad areas of red and yellow making up the foreground, the lapis flecks that convey some of the shimmering water and the boats, and the blue of the sea.

The artwork comes with a registration certificate at National Fine Arts Title Registry, with a transfer of registry certificate to the new owner, transfer of ownership and a COA which came with the artwork when acquired. The artwork is offered and described in the documentation as in manner of the artist. The condition of the artwork is very good, as pictured, common aging of the paper can be noticed. The artwork is also stamped on reverse from the previous collection, and has a reference number marked on verso.

………………………….Andre Derain………………………...

French painter, printmaker, theatrical designer, and sculptor. In the first two decades of the 20th century he was near the centre of avant-garde developments in Paris: he was one of the creators of Fauvism, an early adherent of Cubism, and one of the first to ‘discover’ primitive art. However, in the 1920s he moved away from his pre-war experimentation to a much more conservative style reflecting his admiration for the Old Masters.
