If you are working with Arduino devices, at some point you may well find yourself needing an ISP device. This can be used to re-install the bootloader, program the device without the bootloader installed, or set the device fuse configuration, all of which cannot be done through the normal Serial Interface. 

The USBASP programmer is fully supported by the Arduino IDE, or by AVRDude, amongst others. It can be used to program either 3.3V or 5V devices. The USBASP and cable are 10-pin, and many Arduino boards come with a 6-pin ISP header. An adaptor from 10-pin to 6-pin is available as an option.

Technical details:-

No drivers should be required to use this on OSX or Linux.

Windows should require a driver : please note that for Windows 8 and above, signed drivers are normally needed. These are available online - please search for "Zadig USBASP". Unsigned drivers can be installed, but generally will only work on earlier versions of Windows.

In the Arduino IDE, select the USBASP as the Programmer (in the Tools Menu) - there is no need to set a port

To switch between 3.3V or 5V operation, move the jumper JP2 to the appropriate position.

It is possible to permanently disable the board you are programming with this device : use at your own risk, and make sure that you know what you are doing, especially when changing fuse settings.
