The Alchemist limited edition was inspired by the famous novel “The Alchemist” written by Paulo Coelho. To embody its spirit in a pen, the artisans of Montegrappa have fashioned a form that encompasses the myriad symbols embedded in the story: the sun and the moon, actual pieces and symbols of the metals of alchemy, cartographer’s drawing compass represented by the clip.

A deeply spiritual man, Coelho once made a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, Spain, which inspired *The Pilgrimage* in 1986. The next year, he wrote *The Alchemist*, which was published by a small Brazilian publishing house through an initial print run of 900 copies. When they chose not to reprint it, Coelho found a larger publisher, whose support led it to becoming a Brazilian bestseller. *The Alchemist* has now sold more than 65 million copies, joining the all-time best-selling books in publishing history. It has been translated into more than 70 languages, the 71st being Maltese. It has earned the Guinness World Record for the Most Translated Book By A Living Author. A seemingly simple tale of Santiago, a shepherd seeking his fortune, the story takes the form of a travelogue and an adventure, introducing fascinating characters who influence his decisions. It is both gentle and shocking, the journey exposing Santiago to budding romance and terrifying bandits, the exotica of oases and the desert, as well as the mysteries of alchemy itself. While completing his quest to see the pyramids, Santiago experiences far more than he would have as a shepherd, the life lessons leading to a revelatory conclusion. Paulo Coelho*s inspirational novel reminds us to search our hearts to find our personal treasure. The Alchemist pen has been conceived to relay a similar message as the writer looks forward to the experience of writing with an instrument whose symbolic voice encourages following one*s dreams. Such is the impact of *The Alchemist*, a novel that touches the heart and the soul. To embody its spirit in a pen, the artisans of Montegrappa have fashioned a form that encompasses the myriad symbols embedded in the story. Using the lost wax technique of casting, the pen is decorated with representations of the Sun and the Moon on the cap, the band onto which Sun and Moon are attached incorporating a rotating mechanism that gives the same tactile sensation as the winding and time-setting of a mechanical watch. Physically, the Alchemist Pen communicates the true experience of the practice of alchemy through actual pieces of the seven metals of alchemy incorporated in the body; quicksilver is represented by its chemical sign. The pen*s pocket clip opens as does a cartographer*s drawing compass. Like the book it represents, the Alchemist Pen operates on many levels, and its owners will continue to discover its many details in subsequent studies. The Alchemist Pen has been issued in an edition of 1987 fountain pens and rollerballs in total, in honor of the year that it was published: 71 in solid gold (38 fountain pens and 33 rollerballs), for the 71 languages into which it has been translated; 900 pens in resin and sterling silver (450 fountain pens and 450 rollerballs) to represent the number of copies in the first edition*s print run. A further 1000 pens made entirely in sterling silver with accents in translucent enamel. There are four colours of enamel, representing the four elements: air, fire, earth and water. Only 125 fountain pens and 125 rollerballs will be made in each colour. Lastly, 16 pens (8 fountain pens and 8 rollerballs) have been produced in gold with diamond enhancements, these precious gems symbolizing the riches that feature prominently in the saga. **As a writer, I acknowledge the immense power of the pen. It is with the pen and the written word that I have been able to give life to my thoughts and reach out to hundreds of millions of people. Alchemists were pioneers in chemistry, metallurgy and biology. Montegrappa is the alchemist of pens. In their one hundred years of history, they have forged the most beautiful writing instruments in the world. I*m confident that The Alchemist Pen will become a milestone in the history of writing implements.** Paulo Coelho
