Painted in the 1970s, this watercolour is one of a series exploring the theme of creation. Curled around a vessel a serpent creeps out onto stony ground. It is an extraordinary piece, beautifully painted and measures 26 x 22 cms

Background Information

Over 30 years ago we inherited a very large collection of original watercolours, pastels and oils by an Irish artist (our uncle) who was painting in Dublin from about 1930-1985.

We will send a biography to the purchaser including the artist?s name but as he was a quiet, shy and private man who never exhibited his work, we wanted to protect his name. As we have so many pieces, we hoped to share his art with others who may appreciate and enjoy his talent.

We started this process a while ago but have had a break for a couple of years; we have received wonderful feedback and correspondence from many people who have purchased and are enjoying and collecting his work. Please check our feedback and buy in confidence

The artist was born and grew up in Dublin. It could be argued that much of his work is strongly influenced by the Modernist movement and other artistic movements of the time. As a young man, he worked in London and studied at the Slade School of Art.

His work is rich and varied: including Irish landscapes and abstract pieces.  The landscapes were painted primarily in Clare, Kerry, Mayo, Connemara and Donegal but some were closer to Dublin. He also painted many abstracts: some are clearly inspired by mythology and, in particular, Gaelic mythology whilst others have a strong literary and / or religious symbolism. Many of the abstract pieces are influenced by the surrealism movement whilst others are heavily influenced by artistic movements and artists exhibiting in Dublin.

Many of the paintings are titled by the artist and are often an artistic translation of a quotation. Pieces often reveal further meaning after careful research. He was a perfectionist and often worked and re- worked pieces, sometimes producing a small series on the same theme or with the same title. All are completely genuine. Most are unsigned but we are happy to authenticate their origin.

We have stored and cherished the paintings carefully over the years and the condition of each painting is good but please remember that they are not new: they are not trimmed or cleaned etc. and are sold 'as is'. We do always describe any problems though and will happily answer questions or send further photos. The paintings are unmounted.

After purchase, paintings will be carefully sent protected by double-walled cardboard and a waterproof envelope. Proof of postage will also be obtained to assist you in the rare case of postal problems.

We are very happy to answer any questions and are prepared to sell groups of pictures if you are interested; also, where possible, to combine postage.

We will post overseas but please get in touch for a postal quote before bidding as the price listed may need to be adjusted.

We will be listing others in the coming weeks and months; please contact us if you like particular paintings as we may have others in the same theme.

Thank you for your interest.
