Here we have a spectacular museum quality jewel! Demantoid garnets - 43 of them totaling approximately 5 Cts. These are beautifully faceted and absolutely to die for. They have incredible fire and sparkle and the green is extraordinary. The garnets are all set a jour (open backed) in order to let the maximum amount of light through them. Demantoid garnets were discovered in 1868 in Russia and were extremely popular with Faberge. The early antique pieces are extremely rare and highly desirable. This jewel is from the Victorian to Edwardian period and may very well be Russian.
The garnets and diamonds are set in silver topped 14-16K gold. The setting is magnificent with a floral medallion motif with diamond centered petals. The open work of the star floral brooch is divine!!! The central faceted garnet is approximately .80 Cts. There are an additional 42 garnets comprising the flower petals.
The antique diamonds are magnificent!!!! There are 12 rose cut diamonds centering the flower petals. There are 36 Old Mine Cut Diamonds and 12 more rose cut diamonds at the tips of the outer petals. Thus there are a total of 60 antique diamonds which total approximately 3 Cts. These diamonds are approximately G-H-I color and VS clarity.
The extraordinary brooch can be easily converted to a pendant if desired. It dates to the Victorian period, c1880. The brooch is silver atop 14-16K gold.
The combination of the gorgeous demantoid garnets and the diamonds in the exquisite setting is truly a museum quality jewel!
The brooch is in superb condition. There is no damage to the demantoid garnets. They all match and appear to be original to the piece. The diamonds are all in excellent condition and also all appear to be original to the piece. The silver toped gold is in excellent condition. The brooch is 1 3/8 inches (37 mm) in diameter. It tests for 14-16K. The brooch weighs 12.9 grams.
This is a stunning jewel with great drama and style. It is absolutely mesmerizing and is worthy of the finest collection. The brooch is so immensely wearable either during the day or at the most glamorous affair. I was just at the Oscar Academy Awards and similar jewels were all the rage.
