As a longtime Vitamix demonstrator and repairman, I can tell you the one part that seems to always fail after many years of use on a Vitamix is the variable speed switch on the 5000,5200,VM102,VM103,Creations  and Vita-prep series models.

Does your machine (in the variable speed mode) skip speeds on the lower numbers 1-5?    You need a NEW variable speed switch.

Vitamix calls this switch a " POTENTIOMETER".

Most Vitamix machines have the 2-wire setup some of the older ones have the 3-wire, this OEM switch has both. The simple step by step instructions let you know which terminal to use, no need of a multi-meter. Read all of the reviews, its easy and works every time as long as your machine skips on speeds 1-5.

If you have it fixed by Vitamix it will set you back $100 and you have to ship the machine back and forth to OHIO.

 Now (with my simple step by step instructions) you can do it yourself for under $25

I have personally changed over 500 of these switches and they work every time. This is the Original switch that was used on the 5000 ,Vita-prep models and also works fine on the 5200 and creations models.

You will need the following to change the switch out.

Reg. pliers or 1/2"/13mm socket

Small Allen wrench 

Phillips head screwdriver

Small flat head screwdriver
