The Littorina Rivarossi

(by Gabriele Montella)

The transition from the 40s to the 50s marked a turning point for the activity of Rivarossi.

It was either to stay in the reassuring luxury toy sector or go towards the innovate and technological, stand up to the competition, especially from Germany, thus entering fully the domain of railway modeling.

Fortunately for us Rivarossi chose the second road and immediately the consequence of this change in production destination was noted. The introduction and application of micro suspension springs for wagons and rubber connections between for carriages, but notably the adoption of the motor bearings with the transmission in an oil bath.

This engine in addition to being small and very reliable offered modeling solutions of great value. The drilling of bodywork for the housing the brushes of the plugs now could be avoided, eliminating the unpleasant to the eye cascade of gears and motor bogies and whilst at it, (why not?) limit the speed of the drive bringing in in line with a scale speed.

A gradual rethinking of the catalog starting from the locomotives and starting from the E424, which later became a classic of Rivarossi remaining in production for thirty years, and the Littorina, no longer given only by his nickname, but also with the official name: ALn 772.

This was the result:

They were extremely refined models painted by hand, a small smudge of red can be noticed in the photo. Frames of doors, handles and handrails for the passengers were all in relief.

Today in seeing the motor or ballast weight is not important, considering also that some famous watches on the luxury market have transparent backing so one can admire the movement in motion.

Not by coincidence in 1959 this was the first model to be included in the collector series
