This is a 1900 (MCM) scarce antique copper medal celebrating the 22nd Pontificate Year of Pope Leo XIII.
It is signed by the engraver Francesco Bianchi (1842-1917).
It is also a 1900 antique celebratory medal for the 1900 Vatican Jubilee Year.
In Western Christianity, the celebration of the Holy Year goes back to the 1300 started by Pope Boniface VIII and by which the ordinary Jubilee Year is celebrated every 25 or 50 years.
The Jubilee Year is a special year of remission of sins and universal pardon.
The reverse side of the medal shows the Holy Door with the image of Christ in the clouds.
It is marked VENITE AD ME OMNES HAEC EST PORTA DOMINI.
As I had a very hard time finding the exact translation.....my nearest translation is:
'Come to me (venite ad me) All (omnes) in this (haec est) Gate or Holy Door (Porta Domini).
Pope Leo XIII  is known as the 'Rosary Pope'.
He was Head of the Catholic Church for 25 years from 1878 to 1903.
He issued 11 Rosary encyclicals promoting Marian devotion....thus his title as the Rosary Pope.
He also approved 2 Marian Scapulars.
He was the first Pope to embrace the concept of Mary as the Mediatrix.
In his 1891 encyclical 'Rerum novarum', Pope Leo XIII outlined the rights of workers to a fair wage, safe working conditions, and the formation of labor unions, while affirming the right of property and free enterprise.
Pope Leo XIII had the third longest reign in the Papacy.
With the advent of new technology, he became the first Pope to be documented in a sound recording.
In 1896, Pope Leo XIII was also the first Pope to be pictured on the motion film camera.
He blessed the camera while being filmed.
Today's young Christian followers would say: Cooool!
