Navy Submarine Story - "The Last Cruise" - The story of the USS Tusk SS-426 and the sinking of USS Cochino SS-345 in an Arctic Storm.

This DVD is about the 1949 tragic disaster of the sinking of the USS Cochino SS-345 and the rescue effort of the USS Tusk, SS-426 in the Stormy Arctic Circle. The 2 submarines where on a trial type voyage to test the abilities of the Tench Class submarines in the Arctic Seas. During there trip, the USS Cochino was hit by a severe Arctic storm and part of her batteries exploded. For 14 hrs the crew tried to save the sub, but when the second set of batteries exploded, it was time to abandon ship. The problem was they had to be rescued by the USS Tusk in a very bad storm. In an all out heroic effort, the USS Tusk rescued all of the crew of the USS Cochino, but lost 7 of her men in doing so. This film was a "PLAY" filmed by WESTINGHOUSE Play House, in "Studio One" in 1951. In those days, Westinghouse had a weekly show composed in plays. Although "OLD SCHOOL" style film making on TV, The actors tell a great story even though it was performed on stage with very large props. Very riveting Story!!

1st Film; "The Last Cruise Pt1". This film is a Play by Westinghouse, and starts off with the crew of the USS Cochino sailing along normally until there was the battery explosion in a arctic storm. The crew went about trying to save the submarine and tried all they could to save her. They almost did until???? Runtime; 27:16 Min's.

2nd Film "The Last Cruise Pt2" . This is part 2 to by Westinghouse play and in this part, the crew of the USS Cochino was in serious trouble and trying to contact the USS Tusk for rescue. Finally, The USS Tusk hears her sister ship and comes to the rescue to save the crew of the USS Cochino in a very bad storm. Great story. Runtime 23:42 Min's

3rd Films "Submarine Construction Pt2". This film is by the US Navy and show the internal workings of a Tench-Class Submarine. All aspects are reviewed and you get the great understanding on all of the important components that make a diesel submarine and how they function.. Runtime 28:46 Min's

4th Films; "Diesel Tench-Class Submarine Newsreels." This is a rare small collection of newsreels on the Diesel Submarines. Also explains the need to keep the seas open from Russian diesel submarines and there menace to a free world. Plus, see the USS Pickeral power leap to the surface. Amazing Leap out of the Sea! This is 3 historical newsreels threaded together to tell that story. Great footage.. Runtime 10:57 min. B/W
