About
US; Campbell Films is a
small American family business dedicated to the preservation of rare,
historical films. Started in 2007 by a father and son, team. They have worked
tirelessly to digitize, compile and create truly rare and unique DVD's to share
with the world. The son went to film school and father is a veteran with the
historical passion, so together they assembled the content of Campbell
Films. Most likely you'll find things you haven't seen before. We
appreciate your business and hope the films bring you as much joy as they do
us!
This DVD is a
collection on the "all but forgotten” and amazing US Navy CVE Escort
Carriers and CVL Light Carriers. These
Carriers sometimes called "JEEP Carriers" and were actually 2 very
different design types. The CVE Escort
Carriers were built on top of Oil tankers and are about 550 ft long with a
speed between 14kts to 20 kts. The CVL
Light Carriers were about 650 ft long and were much faster and built on top of
Cruiser hulls. Up to 30 knots. Also the CVL could keep up with the Fast
Carrier Fleet during WWII. Big carriers were very expensive and
"Jeep" Carriers were great for Convoy Duty and also to contain the
Japanese enemy on islands that were bypassed. We hope you'll enjoy.
1st film; "Land and Respotting Aircraft". In this film by USN, we have a short documentary on how to Land
F4F Wildcats and TBF Avengers on a CVE.
This is a really great color film but I don't know what ship they filmed
the training on. If anyone can ID the
ship, We will give you a free DVD for your help. THe carrier looks to me to be a Casablanca-Class. Runtime 25:26
Min's
2nd film; "Battle for Leyte Gulf". In this Army-Navy
film; it tell's the story of the USN's Battle of Leyte Gulf and Taffy 3's
battle of San Bernardino Straights. In
this ferocious conflict, 5 small American ships are sunk by the Mighty Japanese
Navy Including the CVE-73 Gambier Bay. What a conflict. Latter that day, the CVE-63 St Lo was sunk
by Kamikazes, but the fighting spirit of the small USN Taffy 3 fleet, cause the
Japanese to retreat at the end.
Amazing!!! Runtime 20:53 Min's
3rd Film; "No it can be Told". In this film, A CVE-60, USS Guadalcanal set it's sites to capture
a Nazi Submarine. This is a true story
and in the end, they did capture U-505 and with all if its secrets codes. Thus, the story was kept in secret until
after the war. U-505 is now a
Museum. Runtime 15.46 min's
4th Film; "CVL 26 & 28; Weekend Warriors". This is actual 2 films by the Navy to persuade one to join
the USN Reserve. 1st shows a young man
who joins the Navy, and hopes to fly one day.
Great footage of the CVL 28; USS Cabot and aircraft like the F4U F9F
Jets, F6F's too. 2nd reel is of the USS
Monterey; CVL-26, and the aircraft used in this reel are mostly the F9F Panther Jet. Also the TBF Avenger and the SNJ Trainer.
Again great footage of these CVL ships. Runtime 26:06 Min's
