Beautiful theatre memorabilia: Large antique fan from Vienna circa 19. century. Most probably owned by an important noblewoman in Franz Joseph's court. The case of the fan is also very rare and stamped, coming from a shop supported the court with luxury items. Beside the big painting there is a portrait of the same man and the lady in the right and the left side of the leaf. So in my opinion the couple painted on the fan are real people and this fan made as a memory of an engagement.

This fan is made of gilded irridescent mother of pearl sticks and a double light beige/dark cream coloured silk (front) and cream coloured silk gauze (back) leaf. The front leaf is handpainted with love scene hand kiss in a garden flowers and has gold coloured sequins and spangles attached.

The fan measures approx. 10.8" long and 19.6" wide at its widest point. The measurements for this fan in centimeters are approx. 27 cm long and 49 cm wide.

The fan is offered for repair or spares. The leaf is damaged and the left guardstick and first 3 inner sticks are broken (see photos). Broken parts will be in the box as well.

The fan is coming with its original stamped brocate box. On the stamp: J.WEIDMAN Wien I. Babenbergerstrasse. 7. Joseph Weidmann (1844-1905) is a very important leather haberdashery maker. He made a leather case for emperor Franz Joseph, sold by Sotheby's for almost 5000 Pounds. This fan case has the same stamp on it! (see last photo). You can read the history of Weidman and his shop on the internet in german. Beside Franz Joseph, other kings and noblemens were shopping here.
