Rit Liquid Dye works best with washable, natural fabrics and materials including:
- 100% Cotton, Linen, Silk, Ramie and Wool
- Synthetics (Nylon, Rayon)
- Blends (must include at least 60% dyeable fiber, such as above) however these tint evenly and will not achieve full colour
- Nylon-based plastic (i.e. fasteners, buttons, golf balls and more)
- Other natural materials including feathers, paper, wood, cork and wicker

If you wish to dye other synthetics then please look at our other listing for Rit DyeMore Dye - specially designed formula for synthetics

Please be aware there are materials that Rit Dye will not dye including:
- Fabrics made from 100% polyester, acetate spandex, fibreglass, acrylic or metallic fibers
- Polycardbonate plastics such as eyeglass frames
- Polyethylene plastics
- Fabrics with rubber backing (i.e. bath mats)
- Fabrics that have been finished with a coating (i.e. water/stain repellents)
- Fabrics that have been damaged by bleach or severe stains
- Fabrics that are only washable in cold water or labeled 'dry clean only'

Made in USA under strict quality controls

Please test your dye on a test piece of fabric before applying to your garment/fabric - we cannot be held responsible for any mistakes
Instructions
1) Firstly, prior to dyeing, ensure you check the garment/fabric/item's care instructions and read the packaging instructions
2) Ensure garment/fabric is stain free (if need to clear stains use Rit Colour Remover or Rit Super Stain Remover to achieve full colour when dyeing)
3) Select the colours you would like to use. You may use as many colours as you like on one garment, however, its recommended to always start with the lightest colour
4) Weigh the garment/fabric and ensure you have the correct amount of dye/weight (1 pack of powder dye will dye 1lb/450g of dry fabric) 1/2 bottle Rit Liquid Dye & 3 gallons of water will also dye the same amount of fabric
5) Split and dissolve powder dye into two cups of very hot water to avoid dye spotting. Then stir the dissolved powder dye (or well-shaken liquid dye) into dye bath until evenly dispersed (NEVER pour powder dye or liquid directly onto fabric)
6) For very deep colouring, use water at a temperature of 60ºC/140ºF (if tap water isn't hot enough you may use a kettle or microwave to heat the water)
7) For Dark or Bright colours (Black, Dark Brown, Cocoa Brown, Navy, Purple, Wine, Dark Green) use double the amount of dye per 1lb/450g of fabric (i.e. 2 packs of Rit Powder Dye or 1 full bottle of Rit Liquid Dye in 3 gallons of water)
8) For an intense colour ad 1 cup of salt to the dye bath when dyeing fabrics containing cotton, rayon, ramie, or linen. If dyeing nylon, silk or wool add 1 cup of white vinegar to the dye bath. If possible delay adding the salt/vinegar for 5 minutes after the fabric has been in the dye bath. This will help to promote level dyeing
9) Add 1 tablespoon of laundry detergent to all dye baths to help promote level dyeing
10) The longer the garment is immersed in the dye bath, the deeper the colour. Items can remain in the dye bath for up to 1 hour, provided the water remains hot. You will also need to ensure the item receives constant stirring/movement
11) Garments will look darker when wet and prior to washing
12) When you remove clothes from the dye bath, rinse in warm water and then cool water until water runs clear (warm water helps to rinse off surface dye more effectively)
13) Wash your fabric/clothes in warm water with mild detergent and then rinse thoroughly in cool water. Machine dry or hang dry

Tips for Cleaning Up
- Use a plastic sheet or newspaper to cover your workspace- Have paper towels and sponges to hand to wipe up any spillages- Use plastic buckets or stainless steel pots for your dye bath. Never dye or rinse items in plastic or in a fibreglass sink- Clean containers/sinks immediately by scrubbing with bleach or hot water and powdered cleanser
- Clean your washing machine using the highest water level setting with hot water, detergent and 1 cup of chlorine bleach on a complete wash cycle. Clean lint traps. Please be aware plastic or rubber machine parts may be tinted but will not stain laundry

Tips for Special Fabrics
Wool
- To help achieve a deeper colour, add 1 cup of white vinegar to the dye bath. If dyeing a small amount of fabric using the bucket or stove-top method, add 1/2 cup of white vinegar after 5 minutes in the dye bath. Avoid dyeing wool in washing machine as felting will occur.
- If dyeing a woollen sweater, measure or trace garment on large piece of paper. This will allow you to block the sweater to the same size after dyeing, by following the measurements or traced outline. Always dry woollen garments/fabric flat.
- To avoid any shrinkage, never exceed 60ºC/140ºF water temperature.

Nylon
- To help achieve a deeper colour, add 1 cup of white vinegar to the dye bath (especially if dyeing in a washing machine). If dyeing a small amount of fabric using the bucket or stove-top method, add 1/2 cup of white vinegar after 5 minutes in the dye bath.
- Rit dye will dye nylon very quickly with ease
- To avoid wrinkling, never exceed 80ºC/180ºF water temperature.
- After dyeing, allow the fabric to cool before rinsing in cool water

Silk
- To help achieve a deeper colour, add 1 cup of white vinegar to the dye bath (especially if dyeing in a washing machine). If dyeing a small amount of fabric using the bucket or stove-top method, add 1/2 cup of white vinegar after 5 minutes in the dye bath.- To avoid any shrinkage, never exceed 60ºC/140ºF water temperature.

How to care for your dyed items
- For the first few washes you should wash your dyed items on their own in cool water with a small amount of non-bleaching detergent
- After this you should continue to wash your dyed clothes with similar colours in cool water with mild detergent
- It is recommended that you dry clean silks and and special fabrics
