1972-73 WHA SEASON TEAM CARD SET


The New England Whalers defeat the Winnipeg Jets 4 games to 1, to win the very first Avco Cup in the inaugural season of the WHA. Winnipeg, led by superstar and league MVP Bobby Hull (51 goals, 52 assists), racks up 90 regular season points and cruises through the Western Division playoffs, but meet their match against a deep and balanced New England squad (94 pts) in the finals. The competition is fierce in the league's first season with only two teams finishing with less than 70 points, Chicago (54 pts) and New York (68 pts), and division races run late into the season. The six other playoff teams are Cleveland (89 pts), Philadelphia (76 pts) and Ottawa (74 pts) in the East, and Houston (82 pts), Los Angeles (80 pts) and Minnesota (79 pts) in the West. Philadelphia's Andre LaCroix leads the league in scoring with 124 points (50 goals, 74 assists), while Jerry Cheevers of Cleveland tops all goaltenders with a 91.2 save % and 2.84 gaa.

1973-74 WHA SEASON TEAM CARD SET 


The second season of the WHA. The legendary Gordie Howe comes out of retirement at age 45 to play with his sons Mark & Marty. The Howe family leads the Houston Aeros to an Avco Trophy Championship victory and papa Gordie hits 100 points (31 goals, 69 assists). Defending Avco Champs, the New England Whalers win the Eastern Division but fall in the first round of the playoffs to the Chicago Cougars. The defending Western Division Champion Winnipeg Jets slip all the way to 4th place, but it wasn't any fault of Bobby Hull who had 53 goals and 42 assists for the Jets. Minnesota Fighting Saints left winger Mike Walton leads the league in goals (57) and points (117). Houston's Don McLeod is the league's top goalie with a 91.1% save percentage and 2.56 gaa.

1974-75 WHA SEASON TEAM CARD SET

The league expands to 14 teams adding the Indianapolis Racers and Phoenix Roadrunners. The legendary Gordie Howe, now 46 years old, and his sons Marty and Mark lead the Houston Aeros to a second consecutive Avco Cup, and they do it in dominating fashion losing only one game in the entire playoffs. San Diego's Andre Lacroix leads the league in points (147), while Bobby Hull tops all scorers with 77 goals and earns league MVP honors. Ron Grahame is outstanding during Houston's Avco Cup run (.941 sv%, 2.00 GAA, 3 shutouts) and is named MVP of the playoffs.

1975-76 WHA SEASON TEAM CARD SET



The Winnipeg Jets, led by the legendary Bobby Hull (123 pts) sweep the Houston Aeros 4-0 to win their first Avco Cup, ending Houston's two-year reign as champions. Quebec's Marc Tardif leads the league in points (148), goals (71) and assists (77) and bags the newly named "Gordie Howe Trophy" as league MVP. Gordie, at age 47, is still going strong and finishes the season as a top 10 scorer with 102 points. Indy's Michel Dion (.910 sv%, 2.74 GAA) wins the Ben Hatskin Trophy as the league's best goaltender. Winnipeg's Ulf Nilsson is named MVP of the playoffs with 26 points in only 13 games.

1976-77 WHA SEASON TEAM CARD SET

Quebec defeats Winnipeg 4 games to 3 to win its first Avco Cup. It is the only WHA finals series to go a full seven games. The Nordique's Serge Bernier is named playoffs MVP with 36 points in 17 games, while his teammate Real Cloutier leads the league with 141 regular season points (66 goals, 75 assists). Houston's Ron Grahame (2.74 GAA, 4 shutouts) wins the Ben Hatskin Trophy as the WHA's top goalie, while Robbie Ftorek (46 goals, 71 assists, 117 points) takes home the Gordie Howe trophy as league MVP. Speaking of Gordie, Mr. Hockey is now 48 years old and still plenty productive with 68 points in only 62 games. Anders Hedberg of the Winnipeg Jets leads the WHA with 70 goals scored.

ICE NUTZ 1977-78 WHA SEASON TEAM CARDS 


The Winnipeg Jets wins their second Avco Cup with a 4-0 sweep of the New England Whalers. It is the sixth season of the WHA. In a unique move, two international All-Star teams, the Soviet All-Stars and Czechoslovakia All-Stars, play games that count in the regular season standings. They play each WHA team once, on the WHA team's home ice. The Soviet team has a respectable showing, winning three, tying one and losing four; while the Czech team wins once and ties once, losing six. This marks the first-time international teams compete in regular season competition in a major professional sports league in North America.

 Marc Tardif of Quebec leads the league in points (154), goals (65) and assists (89) and claims the Gordie Howe trophy as league MVP. Winnipeg's Ulf Nilsson shares Tardif's assist mark with 89 of his own, and his teammate Bobby Guindon is named MVP of the AHL playoffs. The Whaler's Al Smith (3.22 GAA, 2 shutouts) wins the Ben Hatskin Trophy as the WHA's top goalie. Gordie Howe and his sons Mark and Marty are now in New England. Gordie is still going strong with 96 points on 34 goals and 62 assists at age 49!

ICE NUTZ 1978-79 WHA SEASON TEAM CARDS


The Winnipeg Jets repeat as champions beating the Edmonton Oilers 4 games to 2 in the Avco Cup Finals. It is the seventh and final season of the WHA. Edmonton, New England, Quebec and Winnipeg will join the NHL as expansion teams the following season.

 Real Cloutier of Quebec leads the league in points (129) and goals (75), while Cincinnati's Robbie Ftorek tops the WHA in assists (77). Edmonton's goaltender Dave Dryden (89.0 sv%, 2.89 gaa) wins the Gordie Howe trophy as league MVP along with the Ben Hatskin trophy as the league's best goalie. Winnipeg's Rich Preston is named WHA playoffs MVP. 50 year-old Gordie Howe, still playing alongside his sons Mark and Marty, racks up 43 points in 58 games.
