Solids handling pumps use the entire pump cage to prevent large items (or fish) from being sucked in. Small particles such as sludge, grit and debris can pass straight through. Easy to maintain, they provide a more consistent flow of water to the filter, keeping the pond and fish healthy.
If enough particles larger than 4 mm pass through the pump cage, they can cause a blockage. While this can break some pumps, the Swell Filter Pumps are equipped with a thermal cut-off switch that temporarily disables the pump to prevent lasting damage.
Selecting what size pond pump to run your filtration system is one of the most important things to consider when setting up your pond. Pump flow rates drop when you pump higher and further than the pond, so you need to consider these effects. You should aim to purchase a pump that meets the maximum flow rate of your filter at its height above pond level.
