The law of separation of Churches and State1 is a law adopted on December 9, 1905 at the initiative of the republican-socialist deputy Aristide Briand, who took sides in favor of secularism without excess. It is above all a founding act in the violent confrontation which opposed two conceptions on the place of the Churches in French society for almost twenty-five years.
It replaces the concordat regime of 1801, which is still in force in Alsace-Moselle for historical reasons (the Alsatian elected officials made it one of the three conditions of acceptance of their attachment to France in 1919, without which they requested a referendum , which France could not take the risk of losing after such a murderous war).
It only found its balance in 1924, with the authorization of the diocesan associations, which made it possible to regularize the situation of Catholic worship.
