DATE PRINTED: Between 1879-1898, so c.1885.

SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 17.5 x 25 cm, 7 x 9.75 inches (medium) plus margins.  

ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Drawn and engraved (actually produced directly on stone for the lithographic process) by John Bartholomew, printed by W & A.K. Johnston. The firm of W. & A.K. Johnston was one of the major map publishing houses of the 19th century. William Johnston (1802–1888) and his brother Alexander Keith Johnston (1804–1871) originally trained as engravers, and founded the firm in 1826. 

PROVENANCE: Published in The Encyclopaedia Britannica.  Ninth edition, 1885.  

TYPE: Antique colour lithograph printed on paper.

VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank.

CONDITION: Very good. Suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Virtually all antiquarian maps and prints are subject to some normal aging due to use and time which is not significant unless otherwise stated.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:   The landmark ninth edition, often called "the Scholar's Edition", was published from January 1875 to 1889 in 25 volumes, with volume 25 the index volume.  The maps were supplied by J Bartholomew. There were a number of editions with minor tweaks until c.1899.
