What's on this DVD: USS George Washington SSBN-598

One of the most incredible stories in mankind’s history was producing the Polaris program. This DVD is about that story. First of the original 10 SSBN Polaris submarines, the USS George Washington was the first to marry the 3 technical issues of the day: 1st - a platform (submarine), 2nd - the delivery system (Polaris missile), and 3rd - the size of the warhead to fit on a Polaris. The US Navy scrambled to overcome these problems because of the threat of the Russians launching missiles at sea, or called by codename "lamplighter" and Sputnik. These submarines and their 16 Polaris missiles had more destructive power than all of the bombs dropped during WW2 in just 1 submarine each. Scary. But if they had not responsibly created them, who knows what would have happened. The crews called these boats "Boomers" because of their destructive and incredible power. We at Campbellfilms wish to thank all those who served and kept us safe.

1st Film: "The Year of the Polaris". This film and narration is by Ed Morrow, a famous war news correspondent, and he reveals the story of the USS George Washington and how the Navy accomplished their goals. Really great stuff, and very rare footage of the Subs and the workings of the Polaris. Runtime 27:32 Min's

2nd Film: "SSBN Breakthrough". This film is about the USS George Washington plus others and the final breakthrough of the working Polaris and the marriage of the sub system all working together. Another rare film and great to see. Part 2 is called PERT. Runtime 9:46 Min's

3rd Film: "SSBN Newsreels ". Here is a collection of newsreels on US Navy Boomer Submarines. 1st - Launching USS George Washington, 2nd - Christening of SSBN-598 and Tests Polaris, 3rd - Launching the Ethan Allen SSBN, 4th - Launching of SSBN-628 USS Tecumseh, 5th - First firing of the Polaris Missile, 6th - Loading 16 missiles on the SSBN 598, 7th - Ethan Allen grow Hydroponic vegetables and launches a Polaris Missile, 8th - SSBN Andrew Jackson fires a Polaris Missile, 9th - SSBN 598 Returns home, 10th - SSN-594 USS Permit launches SUBROC torpedo missile. Great stuff. Runtime 11:41 Min's.

4th Film: "Submarine Officer". This is a Navy film of a Nuclear Submarine in action. First goes over training exercises, and then tracking Russian Submarines. Really good color footage of these submarines inside and out, underwater and how they track enemies. Kind of a "Blind Mans Bluff " lite. Runtime 11:07 Min's. B/W

5th Film: "SSBN Story and PERT". Here is a bonus film featuring some footage of President Kennedy viewing the first Polaris missiles being launched, then shows the US Navy's "All Hands TV story on Boomers", and last, to a very long and boring film called PERT. Program, Evaluation, Review, and Techniques system. To the purist, I'm sure you would like this, but for most of us, it is too boring and long, still very important on how the Navy pulled off this amazing feat. Runtime 24:03 Min's
