Circa late 1800's, this antique French opaline rosary is a small rosary just perfect as a gift or souvenir for the First Communion. It is made of translucent antique opaline rosary beads that have rainbowy effects, more on the pink and purple colours against the light. All metal parts in this beautiful hallmarked rosary is made of sterling siliver. This is a small rosary that will suit a young Christian at the start of his/her spiritual journey. Although small at 40cm long, it is still a good size for an adult. This item is also in very good antique condition. It would have been expensive when it was new, but the conditon of this rosary as you can see affirms the fact that if you invest well with what you buy, then you also get something with very good quality. This rosary will arrive in a small gift box ready for you to give as a gift to yourself or to someone. Note that this rosary will not be suitable to be worn as a necklace.

Crucifix: The cross is made with an Art Nouveau design with fleur de lys motifs at the four ends of the cross. This is rosary made with the skills of highly trained jewellers. The tiny corpus is nailed to the cross frame. The oval ring that attaches the cross to the rosary is soldered to make sure all these years (more than a hundred years or more) that it stays with the rosary. The cross frame is hallmarked with the Crab hallmark signifying 800/1000 silver (Outside of Paris Assay). Size: 3cm x 1.6cm
Links: are all made in sterling silver. They are delicate looking links but are very hardy. Given the proper care, this rosary will last another hundred years or more.

Center Medal: the center medal features the image of Christ giving the Holy Communion to a young girl. The medal is signed by the artist, however unknown to me. It is hallmarked at the bale with a Boar hallmark, signifying 800/1000 silver Paris Assay. The reverse side shows the image of lily with a cross beside it. Size: 14mm in diameter including bale.
Beads: all beads are made of antique translucent iridescent opaline beads. These opaline beads are different from new immitation opaline beads. The translucense of these beads are different from those that are newly produced. Against the light, these beads gives a 'firey' blue, pink, yellow or orange effect. It can be mesmerising to look at them in daylight or night light. Unlike most antique opaline beads, they are made with half-opaque and half opaque white finish, so one can see a good play of the light on them. There is one bead that has a line in the middle but this bead is stable and will not crack. Please see the pictures.
