ESTATE FRESH!

1800's Ornate Silver Desk Double Inkwell!

Somewhat perplexing, this wonderful piece presents more questions than answers. The bottom "tray" is relatively thin, leading me to believe that it is a silver alloy rather than silver plate. The ornamentation is a white metal (most likely German Silver) which does not appear to ever have had silver plating. The nuts that hold the bird finals have open loop ends, and the small final at the top also has a looped end at its bottom. The rounded shape around it could be ideal for a small gong OR for hanging a pocket watch, which would seem to be both useful and practical! I have no thoughts or theories regarding the loop nuts attaching the bird finals.

The bottom tray is approximately 10¼" x 5½" and sits on four wonderful small ball and claw feet. It is approximately 6" tall. I do not know if the ink wells ever had liners. I can find no markings anywhere which I find surprising for a piece of this quality.

The overall condition is good to very good. Please super size the listing images to see the condition in greater detail.
