Bryant was born on November 3, 1794, in a log cabin near Cummington, Massachusetts; the home of his birth is today marked with a plaque. Bryant died in 1878 of complications from an accidental fall suffered after participating in a Central Park ceremony to honor Italian patriot Giuseppe Mazzini.
He was the second son of Peter Bryant (b.1767, d. 1820), a doctor and later a state legislator, and Sarah Snell. The genealogy of his mother traces back to passengers on the Mayflower: John Alden (b. 1599, d. 1687), his wife Priscilla Mullins and her parents William and Alice Mullins. The story of the romance between John and Priscilla is the subject of a famous narrative poem by Longfellow "The Courtship of Miles Standish".
Bryant actually lived through most of the history in these books!

Condition: Please zoom in on photos carefully as they are part of the description. I am human and sometimes miss a thing or 2, but I try to mention the book's main faults. all of my books are VERY OLD and have 100+ years of wear to varying degrees
very good condition.... for their age:
boards - very secure/ the paper on the edges of the books are worn [for the most part] / paper part of the covers look pretty good except for vol. 1 [ back side shown cause it looked the worse] / 1 small spot to the front cover of vol. 1 -if you need more pictures just send me a note
textblock- pages very secure
outer joints-  pretty good except...[and all have been professionally repaired] 2" split top front vol 2 / 1" split top front vol. 4, plus volume 4's back cover was professionally re-attached - see last picture for a close up - nicely done!
spine ends- very good - bit of wear to the top of vol. 4
tips- pretty good - about half are just worn through
inner hinges-  for the most part very good
pages- generally very clean, hardly any spots!
writing- none
rips /folds- apx 4 small rips that I saw - a little more than half of vol 4's pages are bent, title page and frontis of Lincoln being the worse, the folds are much lighter after that, I would consider them more bumped than folded - no other folds in the other 3 volumes
other: - marble on the page edges is just starting to fade - still pretty bright for their age though!

My nose doesn't work like it use to so the old book smell doesn't bother me.
