Signed Honorary Dinner Program –  October 27, 1900

Dinner in Honor of Mr. & Mrs. William Jennings Bryan

National Association of Democratic Clubs

W. R. Hearst, President

At THE HOFFMAN HOUSE

Program/menu measures approximately 5 11/16” x 7 3/4”. The cover is separated from the rest of the program/menu. See scans for a view from all angles. Cover features an American flag and small photo of William Jennings Bryan (portrait is just shy of 1” tall). Eleven signatures of attendees are included on inside page on the reverse side of the menu page. All signatures are in pencil (Bryan and Hearst very bold and crisp) and highly collectible. William Randolph Hearst signatures are extremely rare and this one has context – specific date, place, and event. What a conversation piece! A very unique, rare American history collectible. Watermark "ebay" does not appear on the actual item. See scans for overall condition, close-ups, front and back. Some obvious soiling as can be seen in the scans, but the signatures are nice! Reasonable offers considered. Any questions, please let me know.

Here is some more background on Bryan and Hearst:

William Jennings Bryan (March 19, 1860 – July 26, 1925) was an American orator and politician from Nebraska. Beginning in 1896, he emerged as a dominant force in the Democratic Party, running three times as the party's nominee for President of the United States in the 1896, 1900, and 1908 elections. He also served in the United States House of Representatives and as the United States Secretary of State under Woodrow Wilson. Just before his death, he gained national attention for attacking the teaching of evolution in the Scopes Trial. Because of his faith in the wisdom of the common people, he was often called "The Great Commoner".

William Randolph Hearst Sr. (April 29, 1863 – August 14, 1951) was an American businessman, newspaper publisher, and politician known for developing the nation's largest newspaper chain and media company, Hearst Communications. His flamboyant methods of yellow journalism influenced the nation's popular media by emphasizing sensationalism and human interest stories. Hearst entered the publishing business in 1887 with Mitchell Trubitt after being given control of The San Francisco Examiner by his wealthy father, Senator George Hearst. His life story was the main inspiration for Charles Foster Kane, the lead character in Orson Welles's film Citizen Kane (1941). His Hearst Castle, constructed on a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean near San Simeon, has been preserved as a State Historical Monument and is designated as a National Historic Landmark.
