Geidi Primes, 2010/2020

Archival Pigment Print
24 x 24 inches
Limited Edition Print of 30

Grimes has been creating visual art for over a decade, notably directing her music videos and contributing key art for all of her album covers.

Designed and created by the artist herself, this limited-edition print is taken from the official artwork from her 2011 release Geidi Primes, "a perfect blend of oriental pop, chillwave and post-rock," "blending genres like paints on a palette" (NME).

About Grimes

Grimes is a project rooted in DIY production -- an interdisciplinary endeavor derived from the self-taught artistry of its author, c Boucher. Boucher’s creation is titled Grimes, a persona and the imagined realm that she inhabits, spanning art, music, fashion, technology and film. The origin of Grimes recalls a sculptor’s process: actualizing a cerebral concept into physical reality, imagining raw material into being. Grimes takes form as a simulation combining gamer fantasy, anime and manga, science fiction, apocalyptic omens, and anachronistic fashion, among other genres.

Boucher drew her own world, filling copious, diaristic notebooks with mythic, psychedelic imagery and surrealist iconographies. She approached songwriting and music production with the same method -- a self-contained practice in the studio: looping, layering, and sampling sounds into her own audio landscape. Grimes is the result of innate audiovisual experimentation.
"I feel like we're in the end of art, human art," Grimes said. "Once there's actually AGI (Artificial General Intelligence), they're gonna be so much better at making art than us...once AI can totally master science and art, which could happen in the next 10 years, probably more like 20 or 30 years."

About Maccarone Gallery

Maccarone Gallery was founded in 2001 by Michele Maccarone, opening initially in an abandoned electronics store at 45 Canal Street. The gallery was among the first in Chinatown and allowed for mounting immersive, experimental projects unique to the space. The gallery’s mission has always been to champion emerging artists alongside historic figures, with a deep analysis of developing conceptual trends and historical patterns.

In 2015, Maccarone opened an additional location in Los Angeles where it is now exclusively based. Over the past several years, the gallery has pivoted toward a new model in order to operate more fluidly. The gallery continues to deepen its commitment to launching new voices and centering formative work of historic artists through challenging, scholarship-focused exhibitions and events. In 2016, 2018, and 2019 the gallery explored themes of female sexuality through three extensive group exhibitions. Recently, Maccarone’s exhibition program featured solo projects by Trulee Hall, Fred Wilson and Jim Carrey.

Maccarone Presents Grimes

Maccarone gallery’s presentation of Grimes on eBay extends the artist’s debut exhibition launched as an immersive online experience at a time when galleries increasingly move to virtual spaces -- to an even more immediate and inclusive digital audience.

This exclusive launch is the first collaboration between eBay and Maccarone. The digital exhibition is a retrospective like-presentation spanning the last 10 years including various forms of media including drawing, digital prints, photographs, and video, has been translated into a carefully curated retail experience, breaking the art historical barriers of both physical exhibitions and online viewing rooms and moving to a global platform allowing engagement by seasoned art collectors, online shoppers, and curious new audiences alike.

The presentation includes 3 separate exclusive launches which present a thoughtfully curated body of work, both separately and as a whole, with merchandise and limited-edition items that have been considered within the framework of the artist's overall project. A coloring book, an "Evergreen" item, will be featured in all three drops. Grimes' first art publication, "Miss Information: A Coloring Book, 2020" is a coloring book: the form of which is necessarily incomplete. It invites collaboration in much the same vein as the artist's recent Grimes Art Kit, a collective project which allowed fans to create and share music videos using official footage of the artist and open-source digital assets. Here, users can modify and activate the artist's work using their own tools, whether oil paints or crayons. Each page is perforated so the finished (or unfinished) image could be separated and exist as an artwork unto its own. The book features over 16 original drawings as well as an AI-generated poem. Like most coloring books, it is a project for all ages: In the course of creating the publication, the artist, a new mother, learned about infants' nascent visual perception and their preference for bold monochromatic images, and invites fellow parents to use the artworks as objects in an eye-tracking game.
In addition to the coloring book, the first offering will include special limited edition prints made with watercolor ink of Grimes’ album cover art and "failed album covers" which give insight into the process through which an album's final visuals are resolved.

This special launch highlights: A decade of Grimes' discography in paintings. The artwork for each cover embodies the album's spirit and universe. Geidi Primes: cyber and sci-Fi. Halifaxa: lo-Fi and ethereal. Visions: psychedelic and futuristic. Art Angels: orchestral and emo. Miss Anthropocene: cerebral and heavy. The covers develop from being hand-drawn until Art Angels where the art transitions to the digital ending with the tech-centric image of Miss Anthropocene, a self-portrait within a fictional simulation program.

eBay is a natural fit for Grimes -- a self-producing, tech-forward artist and musician renown for her longtime engagement with DIY artistic practice, consumer technology, and open-source software -- as well as for Maccarone, which has been pivoting online and recognizes the platform's unique ability to introduce its artists and projects to a broad public. eBay is a collector's site with a DIY approach to selling that is well suited for a special artistic launch like the Grimes collection.
