At the dawn of auto touring an intrepid traveller would need a quality folding map like this to take his Astin Martin, Morgan, Jaguar or even Vauxhall to the Lakes District  because roads were primitive and poorly marked. This map has the quality of roads and distances indicated as well as the all-important gradients.
It is 18x44 inches, paper panes on canvas for easy folding and durability. Although the covers are worn and marked, the map itself has no marks, tears or holes. Undated but is by appointment to TMs George V  and "Queen" Alexandra. She died in 1925 so I'm dating the map from the early 1920s. The lithography is from Wm. Clowes and sons, London.
Michelin British Isles map #10, Carlisle, Whitby includes the Lakes District in wonderful detail with topography, scale 1:200,000.
