Mahaleb cherry

Latin name: Prunus mahaleb

Mahaleb cherry is a shrub or small tree that reaches heights of 6 to 10 m (20-32 ft).
It occurs from West Asia over Asia Minor to West-Southwest Europe.
Its pea-sized, elliptical fruits are about 8-10 mm (0.3-0.4 in) in size and bitter.
They change colour from green through red to black.
Their stone kernels have an almond-like taste and are ground in southern Europe for seasoning.
Coumarin can be found in almost all parts of plants.
In small amounts, coumarin has a stimulating, anti-inflammatory and vasodilatory effect.
