Holewort

Latin name: Corydalis cava

Holewort is a perennial, herbaceous, ornamental plant that reaches heights of 10 to 30 cm (4-12 in).
It is widespread in Europe, only missing in Northern Europe.
It occurs especially in beech and hornbeam forest communities.
Hollow root prefers partially shaded to shady places and moist, nutrient-rich soils.
Its white or purple flowers bloom from March to April.
After the seeds ripen in May, the above-ground parts of the plant withdraw.
This plant is poisonous.
Its tubers located deep in the earth, contain high concentrations of toxic alkaloids.
Holewort used to be used as a medicinal plant. It was used for menstrual disorders, as a remedy for worms and as an anesthetic.
Nowadays it is used in industrially manufactured ready-made preparations.
