About Bernini's sculpture:
When this famed sculptor unveiled Apollo and Daphne in 1625, the marble work was resoundingly hailed as a marvel. Not yet 30 years old, Bernini captured motion, transformation, sexual appetite, and terror more convincingly than any other artist working in stone before him. “Immediately when it was finished, there arose such a cry that all Rome concurred in seeing it as a miracle,” art historian's recalled of the masterpiece’s public debut that it was hailed as a master piece, in his 1682 biography, Life of Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
  • The mythological story about Apollo and Daphne is interpreted as the first erotic metamorphosis. In Delphi the Pythian games came to life every fourth year, starting with the Olympics in 586 B.C. They were named after the dragon Python that was the son of the Earth and guarded the sanctuary in Delphi. Apollo killed him.
