Naranjilla - Lulo

Latin name: Solanum Quitoense

Lulo is native to the Andes. It is often grown in Latin America but rarely in the tropical areas of the Old World.

It is a perennial, heavily branched and slightly woody shrub that can reach a height of 2.5 m (8.2 ft).
Its round fruits have a diameter of 6.5 cm (2.5 in). They grow on a common flower stalk.
Its fruits are suitable for raw consumption, for further processing into desserts, gels, syrups and jams.
As a dessert, the pulp of the halved fruit is sprinkled with sugar and simply spooned out of the shell.

In South America its peel is filled with banana or other ingredients and baked.
Delicious soft drinks are made from the pulp. Pulp is pureed, then sweetened with sugar and diluted with water.
Wine is also made from the tasty fruit juice. Lulo is an ideal container plant.
