Sage is a shrubby, perennial plant that grows to about 2-3 feet tall.  Foliage is gray-green with a pebbly texture.  As it ages, it has a tendency to sprawl.  Spikes of purple flowers appear in mid-summer. Has A soft, yet sweet savory flavor. Flat-leaved, used in salad dressings, poultry, soups and as an ingredient of pesto. Flavor is much more pronounced than that of the more familiar curled type.

How to plant: Propagate by seed
Germination temperature:  65–70 F  Days to emergence: 7-21
Seed can be saved 3 years if stored properly

Sow seeds Transplanting (recommended): Start seeds 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Sow 2-3 seeds 1/4" deep in individual containers, thinning to one plant per container after germination. Transplant outside after the last frost, spacing 12" apart, in rows 18" apart.
Direct seed: Sow in spring as soon as the soil can be worked. Plant seeds 1/4" deep, 1 seed every 1-2". Thin to 6-12" apart.

Further Tips

Plants have shallow root systems. Avoid even shallow cultivation. Mulch to protect roots, reduce weed competition and conserve moisture.

  • Natural mosquito repellent.

  • Grows well in containers.

  • Edible Flowers: Small lavender flowers in early summer with a mild and sage-like flavor. Flower spikes can be battered and fried, cooked in rice, egg, or cheese dishes, or used to garnish salads and pizza.
  • Plants become woody and should be replaced every 3-4 years. In very cold areas, sage should be mulched in winter months.
