Circa late 1800's, this antique rosary is made of dyed round black wood beads. It is also made of several metal but mostly in steel. There are signs of age and use in this antique item particularly in the steel parts however, this rosary has been conditioned so that it would be more practical for use. As a collector of rosaries, I found that it is necessary for rosaries made of steel to be 'helped' because of the nature of the metal and of the effects of time on this material. But I have also emphasised before, that whatever I do with these rosaries is only to help it become practical for use, otherwise, this antique item will be too stiff and can further deteriorate in time. In this process, as mentioned before, there is care involved to not to alter or destroy its patina acquired in many decades. The steel crucifix and the center medal in this rosary is tiny. It is a characteristic of that era for this type of rosary, so it should not be mistaken as parts that does not belong to it or that which is not proportioned to it. It is also composed of antique medals: a Miraculous medal and Our Lady of Carmel/Sacred Heart of Jesus. For its age, this antique rosary has been preserved well because the metal parts have survived well.

This particular rosary is ideal for your everyday prayers. Being made of wood, it is light in weight even with the medals,  it has the tactile feel to it and it is very simple and practical. Please consider this antique rosary to be a part of you and your everyday life. If you want some tips on how to take care of this rosary, please do not hesitate to email. Kindly read all the details:

Crucifix: is made of steel. It is a tiny crucifix. This crucifix is original to the rosary. The crucifix is two-sided, with one side showing the crucified Jesus. The other side shows the Blessed Mother with out-stretched arms. The metal has been cast and does not show a very clear image but the center medal also confirms it is the Virgin Mother. Size with bale: 13mm x 20mm

Links: are 8-shaped links made of steel. The steel links appear in pictures to have rust but they look worse in reality. They have been conditioned so that this antique item would be practical for your use. For as long as they are used, this rosary will last for a long time.

Beads: are round dyed black wood beads. These are handmade wood beads and are not machine-made. Mater beads size: 5-6mm in diameter. Pater beads size: 7-8mm

Center Medal: is also a tiny steel medal engraved with the monograms JM (representing Jesus and Mary). The monograms are surrounded by twelve stars supposed to be representing the 12 Apostles. For the ones who want to understand more: please read about the meaning and symbols of the Miraculous medal. The center medal is double-sided with the same image.

Medals:

Miraculous Medal: The oval antique Miraculous medal is made of metal (I am not sure but it could be brass and it magnetises on my computer). It is a very old medal as it is marked with the date 1830. The date 1830 does not refer to the time it was made but rather refers to the year that Saint Catherine Laboure started to have callings and Marian apparitions. There were several apparitions to her from July 18, 1830 to November 27, 1830. To understand this further, please read about the 'Miraculous Medal'. The reverse side of the medal features the other symbols seen by Saint Catherine from these apparitions which were then incorporated in the making of the Miraculous medal. This antique medal is becoming very hard to get, so don't miss your chance on this rosary. I once attended a night rosary by which Franciscan monks talked about the Miraculous medal and urged everyone to have this medal as it is so powerful in helping somebody in need or in sickness. It is marked: 'O MARIE CONCUE SANS PECHE, QUI AVONS RECOURS A VOUS' (O Mary Conceived Without Sin, We Recourse To You) Size with bale: 25mm x 18mm

Sacred Heart of Jesus: is made of round antique aluminium medal featuring Our Lady of Carmel on the reverse side. It is marked: VIRGO CARMELI. (Virgin of Carmel) Size: 18mm

Length: 36cm
59 beads
