Photograph Notes: The King & Son scrapyard at Snailwell had contracts to scrap redundant railway vehicles. In the 1970s and 1980s they were one of the few companies equipped and licensed to dispose of vehicles which contained blue asbestos a particularly dangerous form of the mineral. Many British Railways catering and sleeping cars were constructed with blue asbestos insulation and so were sent to the King yard for disposal when withdrawn from service. The method of disposal was to burn the vehicle in a high temperature tunnel. Here lines of contaminated vehicles await the final call.
