Printed locally in San Francisco in 2009 before her rise to become Vice-President and even Senator, Smart on Crime is a relic of time and party past. Written
only 5 years before the post-Ferguson, Black Lives Matter era during
Harris' bid for California State Attorney General, Harris presents an
outdated, unapologetically pro-law enforcement and painfully colorblind
take on criminal justice, mentioning racial bias only twice in the
entire publication. She encourages heavier police presence in schools
and poor communities, argues that prostitution should remain illegal,
and states that drug offender programs are "Law enforcement, not Social
Work", positions all increasingly unpopular in today's Democratic party.
Now as sitting VP, Harris is positioned to be the future head of the democratic party and an
important leader in criminal justice reform!
