Among the Salvadoran stamps with shorter circulation time
are those of Antonio Ezeta, ordered in 1894 and delivered in 1895.
After the
Revolution of the 44, surely few people wished to have to use stamps with the
face of the overthrown
Vice President of El Salvador, so they were obliterated
with a coat of arms.
“In addition to remainders and
reprints the Seebeck sets sometimes contain a few stamps which at best are
essays.
These include an 1895 issue of El Salvador showing the portrait of
Antonio Ezeta, brother of the president, General Carlos Ezeta,
which had been
printed but not delivered when Ezeta was de posed. Rather than endure a year of
stamps with an
Ezeta portrait the printer was authorized to overprint the
entire issue with the country s coat of arms.
Occasionally copies are found
showing the portrait. This condition may be charged to some new printer who
neglected the overprint.
These Ezeta stamps would be essays, perhaps, in a
specialized collection of El Salvador.”
