1865 document Samuel Hartt Scituate MA Brooklyn Navy Yard CIVIL WAR SHIP BUILDER Description: This original document from 1865 document is regarding the Estate of Samuel Hartt and mentions his executor Edward and widow Mary. Samuel Hart was a famous U.S. Navy builder and architect, who designed many ships using during and just before the Civil War including Powhatan (1850), Missouri (1841), and USS Michigan (1843), the first ironclad ship in the US Navy. Many of his ships participated in famous Civil War naval battles.  Hartt died in South Scituate, Massachusetts, and was buried in Brooklyn, New York near where he worked at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.  Hartt's father built the U.S.S. Constitution while Hartt was a child, so Hartt was likely familiar with it and possibly involved in the building as a child in the family business.
