This Soviet badge is quite rare. its a "1st Class Distinction" award for specific athletic skills. the Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc were extremely active in civil defense, and most civilians were trained in light arms and grenades. award badges like this one were given to those with exceptional abilities. this style of badge was awarded for all types of events from javelin throwing toSCUBA diving to marksmanship to defensive driving. they are highly collectable.

The badge is 3/4" by 1" and is enameled  red on silver metal. for basketball...a rare classification in this series.
