COLUMBINE - McKana Giants mix (Aquilegia caerulea) |
Columbines have been grown in gardens for centuries, and are among the most popular of perennials. Hummingbirds will often drop in to sip nectar from the flowers. This hybrid mixture features a wide range of pastel shades and bicolors, over a compact mound of ferny light-green foliage. Excellent for cutting. Since Columbines are relatively short lived, allow some of the plants to go to seed and self sow. Leaf miners or sawfly may disfigure the leaves around flowering time. Simply trim off the ugly foliage and the plants will grow fresh leaves. SOWING: Season: Perennial Sow: March - June Height: 29-35 inches (75-90 cm) Plant Spacing: 10-12 inch (25-30cm) Depth: Press the seeds into the soil Blooms Time: June to July (in 2nd year) Position: Full sun to partial shade Water: Medium Ideal for: Borders, rock gardens, cottage gardens, open shade gardens, woodland gardens or naturalized areas. When large enough to handle, transplant the seedlings individually into 7cm (3in) pots. |
