Each of these silver rounds is struck from .999 fine silver. Their actual silver weight (ASW), or their total fine silver content, is 1 troy ounce. They were produced by Mason Mint, an ISO-9001 certified private mint in the United States.
The design on the front side of the round features a scene of pioneers in a covered wagon. The wagon is pulled by two oxen while another pioneer is seen in the background riding a horse. A map of the western territories of the U.S. circa the 19th century is overlain near the bottom of the scene. A pastoral scene of the frontier fills the backdrop, complete with a sloping mountainside and cloudy sky. Rim inscriptions inlcude "WESTWARD HO!" at the top and the motto of Manifest Destiny, "SEA TO SHINING SEA," at the bottom.
On the reverse side, a trio of pioneering characters are shown in the foreground: from left to right, an early pilgrim settler; an astronaut; and an explorer. A stylized compass is placed between them. In the distance, action scenes of a ship at sea, outer space, and a raft on a river are visible. The series name "FRONTIERS" is boldly inscribed at the bottom rim. The round's composition is indicated just below, reading "2020 1 OZ .999 SILVER." Around the outside of the rim, the inscription captures the theme of the design, reading "EXPLORING NEW HORIZONS ON EARTH AND BEYOND."
