Photograph Notes: There are no fewer than three signs in this view warning motorists of the dangers of wandering cattle as the road enters the common. Grazing rights to the common are held by the Hungerford commoners who must own or occupy one of the properties in the town that have 'common rights'. This allows the commoner to graze two or four cattle depending on the number of animals the owner of the property in 1612 could support through the winter months in his own stables and byres. Nowadays most commoners waive their grazing rights and local farmers are allowed to graze their own cattle for a fee that is used to maintain the common.
