Photograph Notes: The original motte-and-bailey Tonbridge Castle was built by Richard Fitz Gilbert soon after the Norman Conquest to guard the crossing of the River Medway. The motte still exists and has a path to the top. Before 1100 the de Clares (descendants of Fitz Gilbert) replaced the wooden castle with a stone shell keep. This was reinforced during the thirteenth century and in 1295 a stone wall was built around the town. The twin towered gatehouse seen here took 30 years to build and was completed in 1260. The site was purchased by the local council in 1900 who now use the mansion on the right as offices. The grounds were made into a public park.
