Photograph Notes: It's a bit of a fight through the overhanging branches to get down to the beck hereabouts which is why those of us who kayak tend to get off about 250m upstream before it turns into what paddlers are prone to describe as a "tree-filled ditch". Needless to say it needs a great deal more water than this to be a going proposition for the trip so all these branches are well below head height and often underwater by that stage. It's possible to carry the boat down the public footpath (just off to the right of this view) and run the rather dramatic 8m waterfall just before Stonesdale Beck joins the River Swale. Possible not necessarily sensible ... but there are connoisseurs of that sort of thing. In this weather it's more of a kids' bathing spot.
